Course Overview
Have you completed your WFR or WFA Certification, but still don't feel prepared to help during a mental health or substance use situation? Join us for an in-depth training to build the skills and confidence you want and need. This course teaches the signs and symptoms of common mental health and substance use issues, how to begin a non-judgmental conversation about them, and what options there are for appropriate professional help and self-help to encourage, from early intervention through crisis situations. The content also provides tools to assist with self-care for the Mental Health First Aider. The tools learned can be applied not only to situations while adventuring with groups outdoors, but also with colleagues, family, friends, or with strangers. The sessions will consist of short presentations, activities (group and individual), discussions, videos, and scenarios (catered to the WRMC community). Participation in activities is highly encouraged but in a “challenge by choice” style. This is not therapy, nor training to become a therapist.

*Two (2) hour self-guided online pre-work will be required to attend the instructor-led session at WRMC. We've opted for this format to allow for more time for discussion and questions, topics outlined below.

**This version of the training has added value to the WRMC community. We are expanding last year's WRMC Mental Health First Aid Certification Course to include expanded discussions on how to apply MHFA to backcountry settings, and practical time to build what you learned in MHFA into your organization's framework.

Cost includes:
  • BONUS bespoke discussion for WRMC participants regarding using MHFA in the backcountry, including during crisis situations (ex., satellite phones vs. emergency responders).
  • BONUS brainstorm and work session on how to weave in the training to your organization's pre-trip planning and paperwork.
  • BONUS physical copy of the Adult Mental Health First Aid USA Manual, 230 pages of complementary, evidence-based and research-based material with 300 source citations.
  • BONUS printout of priority pages from the Participant Processing Guide (PPG) workbook, in addition to the PDF copy, which we use during class, filled with activities and places to take notes to help process the content.
  • Access to MHFA Connect, which is where participants will complete their two hours of self-guided pre-work. This access will also include an online copy of the MHFA Manual, PPG & Self-Care Action Plan, as well as access to recertify online prior to your 3-year certification anniversary.
  • Instructor's expertise utilizing this content for nearly a decade while working and recreating outdoors, plus four years as a Certified Instructor.
  • Q&A throughout and at the end of class.
